history
During the Portuguese colonial administration , the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) issued the Cape Verde escudo on Cape Verde, which was firmly linked to the Portuguese escudo . The Inspecção do Comércio Bancário , created in 1963, controlled the exchange rate and the flow of money for the BNU.
After the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974 and the subsequent independence of its colonies in 1975, Cape Verde kept the escudo as the designation for its national currency. In 1977, the newly created central bank Banco de Cabo Verde (BCV) issued its own notes for the first time and decoupled the currency from the Portuguese escudo. In the course of Cape Verde's return to the market economy , the Cape Verde escudo was pegged again in 1998 to the Portuguese escudo and in 1999 to the euro .
Coins
The 1 escudo coin depicts a sea turtle. There are three different series of motifs for the values of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 escudos: birds, ships and plants.
