After the revolution in Libya in 1971, the Libyan pound was replaced by the dinar. The subunit millim was replaced by the dirham, the piasters (equivalent to 10 millim) deleted.

Coins and bills

The dinar is a currency unit that is widespread throughout the Arab world and goes back to the Roman denarius . In everyday Libyan language, however, the dinar never caught on, it is still dschineh ( Arabic جنيه Called 'pound'); The dinar is colloquially not divided into 1000 dirhams, but still into 100 g (h) rusch (قروش, Piastres ). As a result, a 100 dirham coin is called a 10 piastre piece. Coins play a subordinate role in daily use.

There are coins in circulation to the value of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 250 and 500 dirhams and banknotes of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, 10, 20 and (new) 50 dinars.

At the beginning of 2012 work began on replacing the banknotes showing Muammar al-Gaddafi . By March 15, 2012, all 50 dinar bills were exchanged, the 20 dinar and one dinar banknotes will follow later. In 2013 new banknotes with denominations of one, 20 and 50 dinars were created. The 1-dinar note shows a revolution scene with demonstrators and a flag.
