The New Metical (plural Meticais ) is the currency of the Republic of Mozambique in Southeast Africa. It is issued by the Bank of Mozambique . A new metical is divided into 100 centavos. The ISO code is MZN. The name is derived from the Arabic weight unit Mithqāl .
The New Metical circulates in banknotes of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Meticais, all of which bear the likeness of the first President Samora Machel . There are coins in the denominations 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 centavos as well as 1, 2, 5 and 10 meticais.
On July 1, 2006, the New Metical was introduced, which corresponds to 1000 old Meticais (ISO 4217 code MZM ). The old cash remained valid until the end of 2006 and could be exchanged at the central bank until 2012.
The old Metical (abbreviation: MT ) had coins in denominations of 1, 2½, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 Meticais, as well as banknotes of 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000 and 500,000 Meticais.
