The lilangeni (plural: emalangeni ) is the currency of Swaziland and is issued by the Central Bank of Eswatini . In practice, there is usually more than one Lilangeni , which means that the plural Emalangeni, abbreviated with E, is used almost exclusively for price information . A Lilangeni is divided into 100 cents, the smallest valid coin is 10 cents. The ISO code is SZL.
Swaziland forms the Common Monetary Area with the Republic of South Africa , Namibia and Lesotho . All currencies of these countries ( South African Rand , Namibian Dollar , Lesothic Loti and Lilangeni) are linked 1: 1. The rand is generally accepted as an equivalent means of payment in Eswatini due to the high level of economic integration, but the lilangeni is not accepted in South Africa.
Until September 5, 1974, a lilangeni was equivalent to 25 luhlanga at 100 cents each.
The 1974 coins came in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1 lilangeni. None of the coins were round except for the 1 Lilangeni coin. In 1982 and 1986 the coins were changed, in 1995 the 2 and 5 Emalangeni coins were introduced. In 2016 all previous coins were withdrawn and declared invalid, but a new series of coins in denominations of 10, 20, 50 cents and 1, 2, 5 emalangeni. All new coins are round, but still show the old coin shapes in the illustration.
Banknotes exist in the values of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Emalangeni. The 2010 series consists of hybrid banknotes . In 2018 a new series of notes of 100 and 200 emalangeni was issued. Also in 2018, the state was renamed Eswatini, as was the central bank, but the new banknotes still carry the name Central Bank of Swaziland . King Mswati III is on the obverse of all valid banknote series . pictured.
