Birr (ብር bərr ) is actually the Amharic word for silver , and since its introduction as the national currency, the name has remained unchanged in the local language. In trade with other countries, however, the birr was sometimes called the taler or (until 1976) dollar .

There are coins in circulation to the value of 1 (rare), 5, 10, 25 and 50 Santim, 1 Birr and banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Birr.

While the official exchange rate is set by the Ethiopian National Bank , the price on the black market for foreign currencies (euros, dollars ) deviates by up to 25%.
