The Tanzanian Shilling ( Shilingi ya Tanzania ) is the currency of Tanzania . It replaced the East African shilling , which was valid before independence in 1964 and until 1966.

One shilling is divided into 100 senti ( cents ). An amount is shown in the form of Schilling / Senti. If an amount equals zero, a hyphen or an equal sign is used here. (Example: "= / 50" corresponds to 50 senti, "100 / =" corresponds to 100 schillings). However, due to inflation, senti coins disappeared from payment transactions from the 1990s.

In large areas of the country, especially in the touristy developed, which is the US dollar now as a parallel currency needed.

Coins

In 1966 coins were issued to the value of 5, 20 and 50 senti as well as 1 shilling. The 5 senti coin is made of bronze , the 20 senti coin is made of brass, and the 50 senti and 1 shilling coin are made of cupronickel . 5-Schilling coins in copper nickel were introduced in 1972, followed by 10-Senti coins in brass in 1977. This first series of coins was in circulation until 1984 and was designed by Christopher Ironside .

In 1987, nickel-plated steel coins worth 50 senti and 1 shilling replaced their predecessors and copper-nickel coins worth 5 (octagonal shape) and 10 shillings were introduced. In 1990 nickel-plated steel coins worth 5, 10 and 20 shillings were introduced. In 1994 brass coins worth 100 shillings were introduced, in 1996 worth 50 shillings and 1998 worth 200 shillings.

At the moment only the coins with a value of 50, 100 and 200 Schilling are in use, as well as the 500 Schilling coin introduced on September 8, 2014. Smaller nominal values ​​only exist sporadically.

Banknotes

In 1966 the central bank of Tanzania introduced banknotes for 5, 10, 20 and 100 shillings. The five-shilling notes were replaced by coins in 1972 and notes with a value of 50 shillings were introduced in 1985. In 1986 200 shilling notes were also put into circulation, in 1989 500 shilling notes and in 1990 1,000 shilling notes. The 10, 20, 50 and 100 schilling notes were replaced by coins in 1987, 1990, 1996 and 1994. In 1995 5,000 and 10,000 shilling notes were introduced and in 2003 2,000 shilling notes were introduced.

Today there are banknotes with values ​​of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 schillings. It shows the politician Julius Nyerere or one of the Big Five without the leopard on the front . Various buildings are shown on the back.
