The open pit Geita is a gold - open pit in the district Geita the same region in the northwest of Tanzania , about 80 kilometers southwest of Mwanza and 20 kilometers from Lake Victoria . It started operations in 2000 as a joint venture between AngloGold and Ashanti Goldfields Corporation . Since the merger of the two companies in 2004, the opencast mine has been wholly owned by the South African gold mining group AngloGold Ashanti and is its largest open-cast gold mine .

In 2008, Geita returned 264,000 ounces of gold (1.92 grams per tonne of ore ), representing 6% of the company's total gold production, and employed 3,200 people. In 2011 the production was 494,000 ounces of gold, which corresponds to a yield of 3.98 grams per ton of ore.
In the first few years, Geita had to pay an annual flat fee of the equivalent of 200,000 US dollars as a municipal concession fee. Through renegotiations, the state managed to switch to a levy of 0.3% of gross profit, which led to a massive increase in the amount calculated for the first time in 2015 to 2.2 billion TSh (equivalent to around 1.182 million US dollars in 2015).
