Geita is a district of the Geita region in Tanzania with the administrative center in the regional capital Geita . The district is bordered to the northeast by the Mwanza region , to the east by the Nyang'hwale district , to the southeast by the Shinyanga region , to the south by the Mbogwe district , to the west by the Chato district and to the northwest by Lake Victoria .

The district has around 800,000 inhabitants (as of 2012) with a size of 7825 square kilometers, of which 1050 square kilometers are part of Lake Victoria. The country lies at an altitude of 1100 to 1300 meters. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . Most of the annual rainfall of 1200 millimeters falls in two rainy seasons. One lasts from October to January, the second from March to May. The average temperature is between 17 and 30 degrees Celsius.

history

Until 2012, the Geita district was part of the Mwanza region. Since the creation of the new Geita region on March 2, 2012, the district has been part of the Geita region.

The number of inhabitants grew from 595,475 in 2002 to 807,619 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of three percent. A little over half of those over five spoke Swahili and just under ten percent spoke English and Swahili. Almost forty percent were illiterate (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 176 primary schools and 30 secondary schools in the district (as of 2019).
  • Health: Five health centers and 36 pharmacies provide medical care for the population (as of 2019).

Economy and Infrastructure

The main industries in Geita District are agriculture, fishing and mining. Most of them are small businesses.

  • Agriculture: Cassava, corn, sweet potatoes, beans, millet, yams, peas and rice are usually grown for personal use. Cotton, peanuts and pineapples are cultivated especially for sale (as of 2015). 55,000 of the 135,000 households kept livestock. Whereas the proportion of rural households was ninety percent, it was only ten percent in urban areas. The highest numbers were found in poultry, cattle and goats (as of 2012).
  • Fishing: Less than half a percent of households make a living from fishing.

  • Mining: Four kilometers west of the town of Geita Gold is in open pit mined. In 2018, 4567 employees mined 15,989 kilograms of gold.
  • Roads: The main road link in the district is the T4 national road. It leads from Mwanza in the east through Geita to Biharamulo in the west and on to Bukoba or Rwanda .

Nature reserves, sights

  • Rubondo National Park : The Rubondo National Park has a size of 456 square kilometers of land and 220 square kilometers of water. It includes the island of Rubondo and neighboring islands belonging to the Geita district, as well as the surrounding Lake Victoria. In addition to sitatunga , elephants, giraffes, hippos, pythons and crocodiles, the park is known for its large number of birds.
