Mbogwe is one of the five districts of the Geita region in Tanzania with the administrative center in Masumbwe-Mbogwe. The district is bordered by the Geita district to the north, the Shinyanga region to the east and south, the Bukombe district to the west and the Chato district to the northwest .

The district has a size of 3,684 square kilometers and around 190,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The country lies on a high plateau around 1200 meters above sea level, from which individual elevations rise over 1500 meters. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification.

history

When the Geita region was formed in 2012, the Mbogwe district emerged from part of the Bukombe district.

population

The number of inhabitants rose from 180,977 in 2002 to 193,922 in 2012. This corresponds to a very low rate of increase of 0.7 percent annually for Tanzanian districts.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 894 elementary schools and thirteen high schools in the district. The advanced level is attended by 5805 students (as of 2019).
  • Bank: A bank branch was opened in Mbogwe in 2019.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Agriculture is practiced on 177,000 hectares. The largest areas are for corn, cassava and rice. Half of the 30,000 households also own farm animals. Mainly chickens and cattle are kept. In 2012, 396 tons of beef, 253 tons of goat meat, 240,000 liters of milk and 32,000 eggs were produced.
  • Beekeeping: 290 tons of honey are produced in 50,000 beehives.
  • Mining: Gold is mined by craft businesses in the district. Trees are felled to secure the pits, which is increasingly endangering the tree population, and the Mbogwe Bukombe forest reserve is also threatened (as of 2020).
  • Roads: The most important road connection in the district is the national road T3, which leads to Isaka , Shinyanga , Nzega and Tabora in the east and which leads to Rwanda in the west . There are also 12 kilometers of regional roads and 400 kilometers of district and feeder roads, most of which are unpaved.
