Shinyanga is a city in northern Tanzania . It is the capital of the surrounding Shinyanga region . According to the 2002 census, it has a population of 92,918.

history

Shinyanga was on the caravan route from Muansa on Lake Victoria to Tabora . The road was also used by travelers during the German colonial era .

In 1910, the German administration established an administrative substation for the Tabora district in what is now the Old Shinyanga town near the seat of the ruler of Shinyanga, and around the same time the American fundamentalist Africa Inland Mission established a mission station in Shinyanga.

Shinyanga has a train station on a branch of the railway line from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma . The city is on the Tabora - Mwanza route , which is mainly used for freight traffic, but there are also passenger trains from Mwanza via Tabora to the capital, Dodoma . Shinyanga also has a small airport and a paved road from Mwanza to Tabora.
