history

For a long time, the settlement was an important base on the route of the East African slave trade , the traces of which can still be seen today in the changes in the soil in the region. The present city was founded in 1907 under German colonial rule (German East Africa) . In 1974 it replaced Dar es Salaam as the official capital of Tanzania. Since then some ministries and in 1996 the National Assembly moved from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, but many government agencies have so far failed to do so. Dodoma's structure and architecture were largely determined by the American architect James Rossant .

Religions

Dodoma is the seat of an Anglican , Evangelical Lutheran and Catholic bishop . The number of Catholics within the Archdiocese of Dodoma is estimated at around 20% of the population.

economy

Dodoma is located in the middle of the only wine-growing region in East Africa . The water supply is provided by pipelines from the Makutupora spring area 30 km to the north.

The local authority of Dodomas is also responsible for the maintenance of the nearby Hombolo reservoir .

The economy of Dodoma, as well as that of the entire region, is characterized by agriculture, so that Dodoma is an important trading center for peanuts , sunflower seeds , corn , rice , wheat , coffee beans , tea , tobacco and millet .

Medical supplies

In 2003 the Dodoma Tanzania Health Development (DTHD) and Dodoma Christian Medical Center (DCMC) were founded with US support. Today the clinic supplies all medical areas with over 100 beds. The Mvumi Hospital has been serving the rural population in the area since 2009. The Aga Khan Primary Medical Center is one of the smaller private clinics.

traffic

The city is located on the Zentralbahn or Tanganyika Railway and is connected to Dar es Salaam by 456 kilometers of railway line.

Dodoma is also the intersection of the T3 and T5 highways . The T5 trunk road is an important north-south road axis in Tanzania. The T3 trunk road leads east to Morogoro , from there by T1 in the direction of Dar es Salaam.

In the middle of the city is Dodoma Airport with connections in Tanzania, where the national operations center for the MAF mission aviators was located until 2014 . From Dodoma Airport there are flights to Dar es Salaam , Arusha and Tanga, among others . Plans are underway to build an international airport that will be named Msalato International Airport.

Bus lines also connect the city in the nationwide intercity bus system.

education

There have been three universities in Dodoma since 2007: the St. John's University of Tanzania of the Anglican Church of Tanzania , the University of Dodoma with around 22,000 students and the Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP) . There are also a few state schools as well as an Anglican and Catholic private school and a hotel management school. Since 1994 there has been a school for deaf children supported by the Netherlands (EOTAS). 100 blind students are taught about 20 km west of Dodoma at the Buigiri School for the Blind .
