Juma Ikangaa
Juma Ikangaa (born July 19, 1957 in Dodoma ) is a former Tanzanian marathon runner who achieved top positions in many races in the 1980s.
Career
Juma Ikangaa achieved his world-class breakthrough when he won silver in 2:09:30 hours at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, just twelve seconds behind Australian winner Robert De Castella . At the 1984 Olympic Games , the marathon was largely shaped by Juma Ikangaa and his compatriot Gidamis Shahanga . While Shahanga then fell back, Ikangaa stayed in the top group up to the 35-kilometer mark, only when the eventual winner Carlos Lopes increased the pace, Ikangaa had to let go. In the end, he finished sixth in 2:11:10 hours. In 1983 and 1984 Ikangaa won the Melbourne Marathon , and in 1984 also the men's marathon in Tokyo .
In 1986 Ikangaa won again in Tokyo and improved his best time to 2: 08.10 hours. In late 1986 he also won the Fukuoka marathon . In 1987 Ikangaa finished seventh at the World Championships in Rome , and in October he won the Beijing Marathon . In 1988 Ikangaa took second place in Tokyo and the Boston Marathon , at the 1988 Olympic Games Ikangaa was in the top group up to kilometer 35 as four years earlier and finished in seventh place in 2:13:06 hours.
In 1989 Ikangaa again finished second in Boston, but won the fall of the New York City Marathon in 2:08:01 hours. In 1990 he finished second in Boston for the third time in a row. At the Commonwealth Games in 1990 Ikangaa was eleventh. Ikangaa took part in major races for a few more years, but could no longer achieve any top positions.
