The Fukuoka Marathon ( Japanese 福岡 国際 マ ラ ソ ン , Fukuoka Kokusai Marason, "International Marathon Fukuoka"; official English name Fukuoka International Open Marathon Championship ) is a marathon in Fukuoka for the male running elite that has been taking place since 1947, usually the beginning December. It is organized by the Japanese Athletics Federation , the newspaper Asahi Shimbun , the television network TV Asahi and the local station Kyūshū Asahi Hōsō (English Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting )

history

In 1947 the run was launched as the Asahi Marathon . The first event took place in Kumamoto , the home of Shisō Kanaguri , who is revered as the "father of the Japanese marathon" . The venue changed annually until 1958.

In 1954, athletes from abroad took part for the first time. Accordingly, the name of the run was changed to Asahi International Marathon .

1957 had the race for the first time, as today, the Heiwadai Stadium of Fukuoka as start and finish point. With the exception of 1963, when the competition in Tokyo took place on the marathon route of the Olympic Games in 1964 , it was always held in Fukuoka from 1959 onwards.

In 1966, the event has been in consultation with the IAAF in International Marathon Championships renamed. The idea behind the run was to determine the world's best marathon runner of the year at the end of the year. This concept worked, because from 1966 to 1968 the world best time was run three times in a row in Fukuoka (after that a total of five times: 1972, 1977, 1981, 1987 and 1993). In 1967, Derek Clayton became the first ever runner to break the 2:10 barrier, and Robert De Castella set the second world record in Fukuoka in 1981.
