Derek Clayton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Derek Clayton (born November 17, 1942 in Lancashire , England ) is a former Australian long-distance runner .

Clayton was the first athlete to run under 2 hours and 10 minutes in a marathon when he broke the world record by over two minutes to 2: 09: 36.4 hours in the Fukuoka Marathon on December 3, 1967 . At the 1968 Olympic Games at Mexico City, he finished seventh in 2: 27: 23.8 hours.

On May 30, 1969 in Antwerp he improved the world record to 2: 08: 33.6 h. Although there are doubts about the correct length of the route (the Association of Road Racing Statisticians considers the course too short for about 500 m), the IAAF lists this time in their current list of world best times. By 2009, Clayton was one of the 200 fastest marathon runners in history. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Clayton finished 13th in 2: 19: 49.6 hours.

Clayton's world record was not beaten until 1981 by his compatriot Robert de Castella . Clayton, who was born in England and raised in Northern Ireland, is 1.87 m tall and weighed 72 kg at competition times.
