Robert de Castella AO MBE ( Robert Francois "Rob" de Castella ; born February 22, 1957 in Melbourne , Australia ) is a former Australian long-distance runner . He is the most successful marathon runner in his country's history.

In 1981 he set a world record in the Fukuoka Marathon with 2:08:18 h. In 1983 he won the Rotterdam Marathon , and in the same year he became world marathon champion at the 1983 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki. The last big win was in 1986 at the Boston Marathon in his personal best of 2:07:51 h. In 1993 he ended his career.
