The men's marathon at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 14, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland , and was played on the streets of the Finnish capital.
81 runners from 45 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal went to the Australian owner of the world best time Robert de Castella in 2:10:03 h, silver went to the Ethiopian Kebede Balcha in 2:10:29 h and the bronze medal was won by Waldemar Cierpinski from the GDR in 2:10:27 h.

Note:
