Hans-Joachim Truppel (born March 24, 1951 in Kamsdorf ) is a former German marathon runner who started for the GDR .

As a 19-year-old, he won the GDR marathon championship in 1970 in 2:20:16 hours. The following year he improved himself to 2:17:37 h as second in the marathon in Karl-Marx-Stadt . In 1973 he won the Dębno marathon in 2:16:08 h and prevailed in the GDR championship against the favorite Eckhard Lesse .

In 1974 he was third in the GDR championship, second in the Košice marathon and ninth in the Fukuoka marathon . In the following season he won his third national title in the marathon and improved from ninth in Fukuoka to 2:13:17 h.

In the GDR elimination match for the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, he finished second in 2:13:44 h behind the eventual Olympic champion Waldemar Cierpinski , who was the only athlete nominated for the marathon.

In 1978 he was second behind Cierpinski in the GDR championship and came in seventh place in the European Athletics Championships in Prague in 2:12:41 h.

In 1979 he was GDR marathon champion for the fourth time and took second place behind Cierpinski in an international match between the GDR, the Soviet Union , Poland and the United Kingdom in Karl-Marx-Stadt.

In 1980 he ran his personal best as third in the Karl-Marx-Stadt marathon with 2:11:56 h. As the second best GDR starter in this international race, he was nominated for the Olympic Games in Moscow , where he finished eleventh in 2:14:55 h.

In 1981 he came in 25th place at the premiere of the European Cup marathon and won the Košice marathon, in 1982 he won the marathon of Karl-Marx-Stadt in 2:15:48 h, and in 1983 he finished eighth in the Tokyo International Men's Marathon in 2:12:41 h. At the European Cup marathon in 1983 he finished 14th and won the team classification with the GDR team, and at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki he came 20th.

Hans-Joachim Truppel is a concrete worker by profession and started for SC Motor Jena .
