Košice marathon
The Košice Marathon (official name in Slovak Medzinárodný maratón mieru - "International Peace Marathon "; English Kosice Peace Marathon ) is a marathon in Košice ( Slovakia ). It has been held since 1924, making it the oldest marathon event in Europe and, after the Boston Marathon , the second oldest in the world. The date of the event is usually the first Sunday in October. The program includes a half marathon for both runners and inline skaters .
history
The inspiration for the run came from three Eastern Slovak sports officials at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. It was held for the first time on October 28 of the same year, starting in Turňa nad Bodvou and finishing in Košice. Seven of eight starters reached the finish. The race with international participation took place in the second year. The start and finish was in Košice, the turning point of the route was in Čaňa . The course of the third edition, a turning point route to Seňa , was then maintained until 1988. Only 1951 (route with a turning point in Lemešany ) and 1952 (start in Prešov and finish in Košice) were exceptions.
In 1931 the Olympic champion of the following year, Juan Carlos Zabala, triumphed by almost a quarter of an hour and set a course record that lasted until 1950.
The international conflicts that finally culminated in World War II meant that the race from 1938 to 1944 was canceled. Under the Hungarian occupation, five national marathon championships were held in Košice without foreign participation, which the organizer does not consider part of the series:
- October 1, 1939: József Kiss, 2: 47: 47.6 h
- October 12, 1941: József Gyimesi, 2: 56: 17.8 h
- September 13, 1942: József Kiss, 3:02:27 h
- September 19, 1943: Géza Kiss, 2:50:14 h
- September 9, 1944: Rezső Kövári, 2:58:49 h
After the war, the original tradition was resumed, again with foreign starters from 1946. In the following years mainly Scandinavian athletes dominated. In 1949 a qualification time of 3:45 h was introduced, which remained in force with various adjustments until 1980. In 1951 the event was nicknamed the Peace Marathon. In 1959, the Russian Sergei Popow set an annual world best time of 2:17:46 h and stayed more than four minutes below the old course record.
1960 a monument was erected in honor of the run, which consists of a statue, the victory messengers , consists of Arpad Račko, and a panel on which the winners of the race will be immortalized. The following year, Olympic champion Abebe Bikila became the first African to sign on it. In 1963 Buddy Edelen was only half a minute ahead of his world record from the same year and improved the course record by more than two and a half minutes to 2:15:10 h.
In 1974, the future Olympic champion, Waldemar Cierpinski, made his debut over the 42.195 km distance and immediately came third. A year later, three athletes from North Korea took the podium places - the first two of them stopped with exactly the same time, measured to the tenth of a second. The arbitral tribunal finally declared Cho Chang-Sop the winner. The defeated Go Chun-Son achieved two victories in the following years, in 1978 with the course record of 2:13:35 h, which remained unbroken until 2001.
At the 50th event in 1980, the qualification times were abolished and women were admitted for the first time: a total of 18 competed in the record field of 1114 athletes. The following year there was a German double triumph: Hans-Joachim Truppel became the first German since Paul Hempel 1929, and the West German Christa Vahlensieck celebrated her first of five victories.
In 1989 the trend towards city marathons was followed and the monotonous and wind-prone route to Seňa and back was replaced by a route within Košice. In 1994 the event was expanded to include a half marathon. In 1997 Košice hosted the 6th World Half Marathon Championships . In the separate race, followed by the regular marathon in the afternoon, the winners Shem Kororia with 59:56 minutes and Tegla Loroupe with 1:08:14 hours demonstrated the speed of the course.
route
The route is flat, completely paved and without motorized traffic. Two laps are run through the historic old town of Košice and the nearby parks.
