Sergei Konstantinowitsch Popov

Sergei Konstantinowitsch Popow ( Russian Сергей Константинович Попов , English transcription Sergey Popov ; born September 21, 1930 in Choronchoi , Buryatia ; † June 25, 1995 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian long-distance runner who competed for the Soviet Union. He became the European marathon champion in 1958 .

Popov won the Soviet marathon championship from 1957 to 1959. In 1958 he also won the European Championships in Stockholm . With his winning time of 2:15:17 hours he undercut the old world best time of Jim Peters by more than two minutes, his lead over second-placed Iwan Filin was more than five and a half minutes. In 1959 Popow won the traditional Košice Peace Marathon .

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the Ethiopian beat Abebe Bikila Popov's record by one second; Popov himself finished fifth in 2: 19: 18.8 hours. In 1962 at the European Championships in Belgrade , Popow crossed the finish line after 2: 27: 46.8 hours in sixth, over four minutes behind Briton Brian Kilby .

Popow was 1.60 m tall and weighed 55 kg at competition times.
