Koen Naert (born September 3, 1989 in Roeselare ) is a Belgian athlete who specializes in long-distance , cross and road runs . In 2018 he won the marathon at the European Championships .

Athletic career

Koen Naert has been taking part in adult runs since 2008. A year later he took part in the European Athletics Junior Championships 2009 in Kaunas , Lithuania , where he ran over 10,000 meters to seventh place. Two years later he competed again at the Junior European Championships in Ostrava and was sixth over the same distance with a time of 29: 18.73 min.

In 2012 he took part in the European championships in the adult area for the first time and finished 11th in the 10,000 meter final. Two years later he took part again in the European Championships, this time in Zurich , Switzerland , and came in 11th place again over 10,000 meters.

In 2015 he ran his first marathons. He took part in both the Hamburg Marathon and the Berlin Marathon and finished in 13th and 7th place respectively. A year later he ran at the half marathon in Birmingham to 3rd place and also made the jump to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished 22nd place.

In 2018, he celebrated his greatest sporting success to date by winning the marathon race at the European Championships in Berlin . He prevailed in 2:09:51 h, which meant a new personal best as well as a European championship record. On April 7, 2019, he ran a new best time in the Rotterdam Marathon in 2:07:39 h, undercutting his previous one at the European Championships in Berlin by a little more than two minutes.

With a height of 1.82 m, he has a competition weight of 65 kg. Naert is married to Elise Cappelle and has a bachelor's degree in nursing .
