Brian Kilby

Brian Kilby ( Brian Leonard Kilby; born February 26, 1938 in Coventry ) is a former British marathon runner who became European champion in 1962.

Kilby made his marathon debut in 1960 and won the AAA championship title in his second marathon . By 1964 he won the AAA championship five times in a row. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, he finished 29th in 2:28:55 hours.

On September 16, 1962 Kilby won the European Championships in Belgrade in 2: 23: 18.8 hours with 40 seconds ahead of the Belgian Aurèle Vandendriessche . On November 29, 1962 Kilby succeeded after the AAA championship and the European championship the third big win of the year. At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth , he won for England in 2:21:17 hours, just under a minute ahead of Australian Dave Power .

In 1963 Kilby ran his fastest marathon, in Port Talbot he was able to undercut the nine-year-old British record of Jim Peters in 2:14:43 hours .

At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo he reached fourth place in 2:17:02 hours, around forty seconds behind his compatriot Basil Heatley (silver) and the Japanese Kōkichi Tsuburaya ; only the Ethiopian Abebe Bikila , over four minutes ahead of Heatley and Tsubaraya, was completely out of reach for Kilby.

For his last marathon, Kilby competed at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston (Jamaica) in 1966 ; he gave up on the way.

Brian Kilby is 1.70 m tall and weighed 57 kg at competition times.
