Karel Lismont (born March 8, 1949 in Borgloon ) is a former Belgian long-distance runner and two-time medalist at the Olympic Games. With a height of 1.68 m, his competition weight was 55 kg.

When the lanky Belgian age of 22 on August 15 in Helsinki at the European Championships in 1971 in the marathon took, he was largely unknown, although he had been in 1970 and 1971 Belgian champion over this distance. Five days earlier he had finished 16th in the 10,000 meter run with 28: 31.2 min . But in the marathon he ran away from his famous compatriot Gaston Roelants and the favored Britons Trevor Wright and Ron Hill in 2: 13: 09.0 hours . After his victory, Lismont was no longer a stranger, and in the years to come he was able to prove emphatically that his success was not a flash in the pan.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he won the silver medal behind Frank Shorter from the USA in 2: 14: 31.8 hours . Four years later, at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he won bronze with his personal best of 2: 11: 12.6 h behind Waldemar Cierpinski and Frank Shorter.

At the European Championships in Prague in 1978 he won bronze in 2: 12: 07.7 hours, as well as four years later at the European Championships in Athens in 1982 . At the world championships in cross country he won two bronze medals in the individual ranking in 1974 and 1978. In the team competition he won gold with the Belgian team in 1973, 1974 and 1977, silver in 1976 and bronze in 1980.

At the first World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 he managed to stay under 2:12 hours for the last time, but although he was only a minute behind the winner Robert De Castella with 2:11:24 h , it was only enough for 9th place In the same year he won the Berlin Marathon , and in 1986 and 1987 he won the first two editions of the Hamburg Marathon . His trainer Frans Borremans attached great importance to a large scope of training and a large number of races in cross-country and on the road. So it started almost every week in winter. Lismont was named Belgian Sportsman of the Year ( Nationale trofee voor sportverdienste ) in 1972, an honor that everyone can only get once.
