Entry ticket for the European Athletics Championships

The 12th European Athletics Championships took place from August 29 to September 3, 1978 in Prague , the capital of what was then Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic ).

Competitions

The women's competition catalog was again expanded to include a discipline at these European championships. In addition, there was now the 400-meter hurdles .

Athletic performance

The most successful nation this year was the Soviet Union , after the GDR had been in the lead in the last three European championships . The two associations were also at these European championships with thirteen (USSR) and twelve titles (GDR) well ahead of the other countries. The Federal Republic of Germany and Italy followed with four gold medals each. - An unofficial scoring was preceded by the Soviet Union with 224 points, ahead of the GDR (131), the Federal Republic of Germany (84), Great Britain (66), Poland (65) and Italy (57). Sepp Zeilbauer's fourth place earned the Austrian Federation three points, which meant that the Austrians, together with the Netherlands, came in 20th and last place.

Sports political tensions

Because the organizers insisted on the designation "Federal Republic of Germany", but the association designation was "Germany", the entire delegation of the Federal Republic of Germany stayed away from the opening and closing ceremony.

doping

For the first time at a major international athletics event, there were several doping-related disqualifications. There were a total of five proven cases, four athletes came from the Soviet Union and one athlete from Bulgaria. The competitions in the field of throw / push and the all-around competition were affected. The five athletes involved were:

  • Yevgeny Mironov , Soviet Union - shot put (initially runner-up). He was subsequently disqualified for violating the doping regulations. The athletes who were initially placed behind him in the final moved up one rank each.
  • Vasily Yershov , Soviet Union - javelin throw (initially fifth). He was subsequently disqualified for violating the doping regulations and suspended for eighteen months. The athletes who were initially placed behind him in the final moved up one rank each.
  • Elena Stoyanova , Bulgaria - Shot put (initially fifth). However, the title was subsequently revoked for a doping offense . The athletes who were initially placed behind her in the final moved up one rank each.
  • Nadia Tkachenko , Soviet Union - Pentathlon (First First). However, the title was subsequently revoked for a doping offense . The athletes who were initially placed behind her in the final moved up one rank each.
  • Yekaterina Gordijenko , Soviet Union - Pentathlon (initially fifth). She was subsequently disqualified for violating the doping regulations. The athletes who were initially placed behind her in the final moved up one rank each.

The scores were based on the points table from 1964.
For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved in 1985 according to the current rating system are also listed. After that, the seventh placed Johannes Lahti and the eighth placed Rainer Pottel should have swapped their ranks. Also in seventeenth - Armin Tschenett - and eighteen - Christer Lythell - the order would have been reversed. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

Date: September 2nd

The evaluation was based on the points table from 1977, in which the change of discipline in this competition was taken into account - the 800-meter run instead of the 200-meter run as the final exercise. The results achieved in previous pentathlon competitions were therefore no longer comparable with the results of the competition in its current form.

Using the rating system that is valid today for the heptathlon - points are listed in the table below for comparison - the silver and bronze medals would have to be swapped. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

The pentathlon was affected by two doping cases:

  • Originally, the Soviet athlete Nadija Tkachenko was ahead with 4744 points. However, the title was subsequently revoked for a doping offense .
  • Yekaterina Gordijenko, also from the USSR, initially fifth, was subsequently disqualified for violating the doping regulations.

The athletes who were initially placed behind the two doping offenders in the final moved up one rank each.
