Michael Wessing

Michael Thomas Maria Wessing (born August 29, 1952 in Recklinghausen ; † May 7, 2019 in Osnabrück ) was a German athlete .

Michael Wessing initially belonged to the sports club Recklinghäuser LC , later to the TV Wattenscheid . The javelin thrower took 14th place at the 1974 European Championships with 71.68 m and ninth place at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal with 79.06 m. The greatest success of his career he achieved at the European Championships in 1978 when he won the gold medal (82.94 m - invalid - 72.08 m - 89.12 m - 85.74 m - 83.66 m).

With his best mark of 94.22 m, set in Oslo in August 1978, Wessing set a German record. Before the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 he was thus one of the favorites, but could not compete because of the Olympic boycott.

For his sporting successes he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Walter Scheel . He was 1.82 m tall and weighed 88 kg during his playing days. Michael Wessing died in May 2019 as a result of an operation.
