Zigismunds Sirmais (born May 6, 1992 in Riga ) is a Latvian javelin thrower .

Athletic career

Simais gained his first international experience at the Junior World Championships 2010 in Moncton, Canada, where he took seventh place in the javelin throw with a width of 73.38 m. In the following year he improved the junior world record of the Norwegian Andreas Thorkildsen by 60 cm to 84.27 m at the European Winter Throwing Cup in Sofia . He achieved a further increase to 84.69 m around three months later at a competition in Bauska. He also won the Junior European Championships in Tallinn with a width of 81.53 m. He also took part in the World Championships in Daegu , but was eliminated there in qualifying. Also at the European Championships in Helsinki in 2012 and at the Olympic Games in London , he did not reach the final.

In 2013 Sirmais won the gold medal at the U23 European Championships in Tampere with a width of 82.77 m. However , he had to cancel his participation in the World Championships in Moscow due to an injury.

In 2014 Sirmais won the European Winter Throw Cup in Leira with a width of 81.60 m. At the Ostrava Golden Spike, he increased his personal best to 86.61 m. At the Latvian championships, however, he only finished fifth and surprisingly missed participation in the European championships in Zurich . In the 2015 season he did not succeed in a throw over 80 m. At the Summer Universiade in Gwangju , a width of 79.37 m was enough for him to win the bronze medal.

Sirmais celebrated his greatest international success to date with the surprising title win at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam. He increased his personal best to 86.66 m and left previously higher rated athletes such as the world's best of the year Thomas Röhler from Germany and the defending champion Antti Ruuskanen from Finland. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he could not confirm this performance and missed the finals.
