The high jump of the men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 1 and 2 September 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

In this competition, the athletes from the USSR achieved a double victory. World record holder Vladimir Yashchenko became European champion . The silver medal went to Aljaksandr Hryhorjeu . Bronze went to Rolf Beilschmidt from the GDR.

Record improvement

European champion Vladimir Jaschtschenko improved the existing EM record in the final on September 2nd by five centimeters to 2.30 m. Soviet Union 1955Soviet Union

26 participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 2.18 m. Since only eight athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes so that at least twelve high jumpers were in the final. The next height below the qualification value - 2.15 m - was skipped by ten athletes (highlighted in light green). So there was a final field of eighteen participants for the following day.
