qualification

August 30, 1978, 5:00 p.m.

23 participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 5.25 m. Since only three athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes so that at least twelve pole vaulters were in the final. The next height below the qualification value - 5.15 m - was skipped by ten athletes (highlighted in light green). So there was a final field of thirteen participants for the following day.
