The discus throw men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 2 and 3 September 1978 Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

European champion was the 1976 Olympic runner-up and world record holder Wolfgang Schmidt from the GDR, who had already won bronze in the shot put two days earlier . Markku Tuokko from Finland took second place . The Czechoslovak Imrich Bugár came third.

Record improvement

European champion Wolfgang Schmidt improved the existing EM record in the final on September 3rd by 2.92 m to 66.82 m. Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR

qualification

Twenty participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 60.00 m. Since only nine athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 59.28 m was enough for the final.
