The men's 50 km walk at the European Athletics Championships 1978 was held on September 2, 1978 in the streets of Prague . In contrast to the Olympic Games - there had only been the twenty-kilometer walking competition there in 1976 - this discipline was not removed from the competition calendar. From 1980 onwards, walking 50 km was once again part of the Olympic program without exception.

European champion was Jorge Llopart from Spain . Second place went to the Soviet European champion from 1971 and Olympic runner-up from 1972 Weniamin soldiersko . Bronze went to Jan Ornoch from Poland .
