The 200-meter race of women in the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 31 August and 1 September 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.
In this competition, the GDR sprinters won two medals, silver and bronze. The European champion was Lyudmila Kondratjewa from the USSR. Second place went to the 100 meter winner Marlies Göhr . Bronze went to Carla Bodendorf .
