The women's 200-meter run at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 20 and 21, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .
The European champion was the Russian defending champion and runner-up in 1997, Irina Priwalowa , who had finished second over 100 meters two days earlier . She won in front of the reigning world champion Shanna Pintussewytsch from Ukraine. Bronze went to the German Melanie Paschke .

The existing EM record was not set at these European championships and was not improved. In almost all races, the sprinters had to struggle with strong headwinds, so that it was impossible to improve records.
