The 200-meter race of women in the 2006 European Athletics Championships was on 10 and 11 August 2006 at the Ullevi stadium of the city of Gothenburg held.

The Russian sprinters won two medals in this competition, silver and bronze. Like over 100 meters, Belgian Kim Gevaert , who finished second in the European Championship in 2002, became European champion. Yulia Gushchina won the silver medal. Bronze went to Natalja Russakowa .

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.

Kim Gevaert - after two silver medals four years earlier now double European champion on the sprint courses

No Belgian had won gold since the first European Women's Championships in 1938 . Now, two days after her victory over 100 meters , Kim Gevaert also won the 200-meter run with ease. At the finish she was expected by the high jumper Tia Hellebaut , who had won high jump gold immediately before the start of the race . The two Belgians went on the lap of honor together.
