Hanna Mariën

Hanna Mariën (born May 16, 1982 in Herentals ) is a Belgian sprinter and bobsleigh athlete . She is the first Belgian female athlete to have participated in both winter and summer Olympic games. She was the flag bearer for her team at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi .

Athletics career

At the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 , she reached the semifinals of the 200-meter run and narrowly missed the final with 23.59 s.

A year later she won her first medal in an individual discipline in a major international competition with the bronze medal in the 200 m in 23.48 s at the Summer Universiade 2007 in Bangkok .

In the same year she won the bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka with the 4 x 100 meter relay in the line-up of Olivia Borlée , Hanna Mariën, Élodie Ouédraogo and Kim Gevaert in the Belgian national record time of 42.75 s.

The same team they won at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing with the Belgian 4 × 100 Meters Relay with renewed national record in 42.54 s the gold medal .

Bobsleigh career

Together with the pilot Elfje Willemsen she was able to achieve 19th place at the 2013 Bobsleigh World Championship . The duo finished fourth at the 2014 European Bobsleigh Championships . Willemsen and Mariën were the only Belgian participants in the Olympic Games in Sochi in the discipline of bobsleigh.
