Yolanda Gail Devers (born November 19, 1966 in Seattle , Washington ) is a former track and field athlete from the United States .

biography

Devers was a promising hope for a medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul , but then she got health problems. Among other things, she suffered from severe migraines and lost some of her eyesight. Although she qualified for the 100-meter hurdles , she only made it to the semi-finals. Her health deteriorated noticeably. In 1990 she was diagnosed with Graves' disease , and Devers began radiation therapy.

Devers recovered very quickly and resumed training. At the 1991 World Championships she won silver over the 100 meter hurdles. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , Devers won the 100-meter run very close ahead of the Jamaican Juliet Cuthbert . In her actually stronger discipline, the 100 meter hurdles, she led until shortly before the end, but stumbled at the last hurdle and came in fifth. At the 1993 World Championships , Devers won both the 100 meter and 100 meter hurdles. She was able to defend the world hurdles title in 1995 .

The 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta were almost exactly the same for Devers as they were four years earlier. In the 100 meter race, she again prevailed in a photo finish (this time ahead of Merlene Ottey ). In her actual parade discipline, 100 meter hurdles, she again missed a medal and came in fourth. With the 4-by-100-meter relay , Devers won a second gold medal.

After that, Devers concentrated on the hurdles and won the world title again in 1999 . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , she had to give up injured before the semifinals. With the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens she wanted to win a medal in the 100 meters and 100 meters hurdles again, but failed each of the heats.

Their trademarks were particularly long and colorful fingernails.
