100 meter hurdles
The 100 meter hurdles is an Olympic discipline of athletics for women. On a straight 100-meter route, ten 84-centimeter high hurdles set up at equal intervals have to be crossed. They are designed in such a way that they can fall over when bumped, which will not be counted as a fault for the competitor unless it is done on purpose.
The first hurdle is 13.00 m from the starting point, the gaps are 8.5 m long, and the final sprint is 10.50 m.
An 80-meter hurdles race was held at the Olympic Games from 1932 to 1968 ; In 1972 the route was extended to 100 meters. At the German championships in 1968, the new distance was tested parallel to the previous 80-meter route. From 1969 until today only the 100 meters are run. The men traditionally run 110 meter hurdles .
The fastest 100-meter hurdlers achieve a time of 12.5 seconds (world record: 12.20 s). This corresponds to a speed of 8.0 m / s or 28.8 km / h and is around 1.5 seconds slower than in the 100-meter run .
history
The hurdles sprint for women has been practiced since the beginning of women's athletics, around after the end of the First World War . The selected routes and hurdles were initially very different. While men's competitions were set at 110 m / 120 yards , the Women's Sports Federation FSFI registered records for eight different disciplines until 1926 (60 yards / 75 cm high, 60 yards / 61 cm, 65 yards / 75 cm, 83 yards / 75 cm, 100 yards / 75 cm, 100 yards / 61 cm, 120 yards / 75 cm, 110 meters / 75 cm). At the first women's world games in 1922, a 100-yard hurdle competition was held.
From 1926 on, people only ran the 80-meter route - under the conditions that existed until 1968 : eight hurdles had to be crossed with an 8-meter gap and a height of 76.2 centimeters.
Until 1935 - as with the men - no more than three hurdles were allowed to be knocked over, otherwise the runner was disqualified. Records were only recognized if all the hurdles were stopped. With the abolition of this rule in 1935, L-shaped hurdles were introduced, which tip over slightly to reduce the risk of injury when bumped.
The first 80-meter hurdles for women in Germany took place at the 8-nation meeting of the SCC on June 12, 1927 in Berlin, Eva von Bredow set a world record. From 1929 he was part of the competition program of the German championships .
The 80-meter hurdles were one of the demands of the women's sports federation FSFI for the Olympic Games in 1928. It was not included in the Olympic program until 1932 . From 1949 on, the 80-meter hurdles was a sub-discipline in the women's pentathlon .
In the 1960s, a 100-meter hurdle race was experimented with, in which the hurdles were 76.2 centimeters high.
During the Olympic Games in 1968 the introduction of the 100-meter hurdles with 84-centimeter hurdles was decided. The first international highlight with the 100-meter hurdles was the European Athletics Championships in 1969 (winner: Karin Balzer , GDR ).
