LaVonna Martin

LaVonna Martin ( LaVonna Ann Martin, after marriage to Martin-Floreal ; born November 18, 1966 in Dayton , Ohio ) is a former American hurdler whose specialty was the 100-meter distance .

During her college days, she went to the University of Tennessee and was NCAA indoor champion in the 55-meter hurdles in 1987 and 1988 . At the Pan American Games in 1987 she won gold and at the World Championships in Rome she was eighth. The following year, she reached the semifinals at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

In 1991 Martin was banned for two years for taking the diuretic furosemide . The suspension was later reduced to 14 months so that it could start in the American qualification for the 1992 Olympics . In Barcelona she had her greatest success. There she won the silver medal behind the Greek Voula Patoulidou and in front of the Bulgarian Jordanka Donkowa . The following year silver followed over 60 m hurdles at the World Indoor Championships in Toronto .

She is married to the former Canadian long and triple jumper Edrick Floreal .
