Trebisonda Valla

Trebisonda "Ondina" Valla (born May 20, 1916 in Bologna , † October 16, 2006 in L'Aquila ) was an Italian athlete and Olympic champion in the 80-meter hurdles .

Life

Trebisonda Valla was born in Bologna as the first girl after four brothers. The first name, which is unusual in Italy, is probably due to the Turkish city of Trabzon (ital. Trebisonda ). She was called Ondina by friends and family . Her talent was recognized as a young girl and by the age of 13 she was one of the best athletes in Italy. At the age of 14 she became Italian champion and was accepted into the national team. In 1931 she won silver over the 80 meter hurdles at the Olimpiadi della Grazia in Florence. At the International Student Games in 1933, she won over 80 meter hurdles, over 100 meters and in the high jump and won bronze in the long jump .

She celebrated her greatest success at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . In the semifinals she set a new world record over 80 meter hurdles with 11.6 seconds. This world record was officially recognized, although an unauthorized tail wind of 2.8 m / s was measured. She won the final in 11.7 seconds ahead of the German Anni Steuer (silver) and the Canadian Elizabeth Taylor (bronze). With the Italian in the 4 x 100 meter relay , she finished fourth with the Italian team in 48.7 s.

During her career, she broke Italian athletics records 35 times and also set records 13 times. Even if it did not correspond to the female ideal of fascism , it served propaganda as it seemed to demonstrate the superiority of the Italian race.
