Maria Sander

Maria Sander (born October 30, 1924 in Dinslaken as Maria Domagala ; † January 12, 1999 in Niederwahn , near Much , near Cologne ) was a German athlete and Olympic medalist.

Sander, starting for the SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen (from 1951 for the SuS 09 Dinslaken ), won the 80-meter hurdles at the German Championships in 1943, 1946 (under her maiden name Domagala), 1948, 1949, 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1954. In 1955 she won silver and 1956 bronze.

In the 100-meter run at the German Championships she won bronze in 1949, silver in 1950 and 1951, and gold in 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955.

She won the German pentathlon championship in 1950, 1952, 1953 and 1954. In 1951 she was runner-up.

Furthermore, she was runner-up in the German championship in 1952 in the 200-meter run and in 1953 came third in the long jump .

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , she won the bronze medal in the 80-meter hurdles behind the Australian Shirley Strickland de la Hunty (gold) and the Russian Marija Golubnitschaja (silver). In the 4 x 100 meter relay she won the team silver medal together with her teammates Ursula Knab , Helga Klein and Marga Petersen , behind the team from the USA (gold) and in front of the team from Great Britain (bronze). She was also fifth in the 100 meter final.

At the European Athletics Championships in 1954 in Bern, she won two silver medals: in the pentathlon (4485 points) and in the 4 x 100 meter relay.

At a height of 1.65 m, she had a competition weight of 69 kg.

In 1956 Maria Sander was awarded the Rudolf Harbig Memorial Prize. As early as October 27, 1952, she was honored by being awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf.
