athletics
The most successful US athlete in Barcelona was Gwen Torrance, who won gold in the 200 meters and two medals with the relay, in the 100-meter run she just missed the medal ranks. Three male participants also won double gold, including Carl Lewis, who could call a total of eight gold medals his own. However, he was unable to take part in the 100-meter run due to injury. In the men's 4-by-100-meter and 4-by-400-meter races, the US relay set a new world record, as did Kevin Young in the 400-meter hurdles. In the men's long jump, all medal ranks went to the United States.
