Melvin Stewart
Melvin Stewart (born November 18, 1968 in Gastonia , North Carolina ) is a retired American swimmer .
At the 1991 World Swimming Championships in Perth , he won his first major title over 200 m butterfly . In the final he won ahead of the German Michael Groß . With the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay, he took second place behind the German relay.
At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona he was both Olympic champion in the 200 m butterfly and in the 4 x 100 meter medley relay . He also won bronze with the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay.
From 1991 to 1995 he held the world record for the 200 m butterfly. In 2002 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
