Paweł Korzeniowski (born July 9, 1985 in Oświęcim ) is a Polish swimmer .

Career

His first big success was winning the 2003 European Junior Championship over 200 m butterfly . At the 2003 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, he finished 8th in the 1500 m freestyle.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he first appeared in the Olympic Games and started in the 200 m butterfly and 400 m freestyle disciplines. On August 16, he reached the final over 200 m butterfly with the third-best time just behind Michael Phelps and was fourth in the final on August 17.

His final breakthrough to the top of the world was at the 2005 World Swimming Championships in Montréal, when he was the fastest swimmer in the prelims and couldn't be stopped by anyone in the final either. He won the 200 m butterfly with a new Polish record and improved his own personal best by a second. The only flaw of this world title was that Michael Phelps did not run this route. At the European Swimming Championships in Budapest in 2006 , Korzeniowski was the big favorite over the 200 m butterfly and was able to win the European championship title. Two years later, at the European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven in 2008 , he was runner- up behind Ioannis Drymonakos in his favorite discipline, the 200 m butterfly. But after it became known that Drymonakos tested positive for the steroid trenbolone , Korzeniowski inherited the European championship title and the European record . Because with his swim time of 01: 54.38 min he also stayed below the old European record of Franck Esposito .

Five months later, at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , the Russian Nikolai Skworzow broke this record. Korzeniowski finished these games in sixth place over the 200 m butterfly in 1: 54.60 minutes and thus remained above his personal best in Eindhoven.

In the final of the swimming world championships in 2009 he swam the 200 m butterfly in 01: 53.23 min and set a new Polish record and won the silver medal behind Michael Phelps.
