Ioannis Drymonakos ( Greek Ιωάννης Δρυμωνάκος , born January 18, 1984 in Athens ) is a Greek swimmer .

Career

Ioannis Drymonakos took part in the Olympic Games twice. In 2000 , the 25th place over the 200 m butterfly was still his best placement. In 2004 , however, he only just missed the final of the 400 m individual medley and finally came in ninth. He was active for the swimming club KOA Tripolis and the AO Okeanos.

On March 21, 2008 Drymonakos won the gold medal over the 200-meter butterfly at the European Championships in Eindhoven . He was the first Greek ever to set a new European record. After it became known that Drymonakos had tested positive in a doping control in the run-up to the European Championships, he was revoked both the European record and the European title.

Doping scandal

In mid-May 2008 it became known that during a training doping control at the beginning of March 2008 the urine sample from Drymonakos tested positive for the steroid trenbolone . The required B sample yielded the same result, whereupon Drymonakos announced the end of his career. The World Swimming Federation (FINA) now had to decide what to do with the medals won by Drymonakos at the European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven in 2008 and the World Short Course Championships in Manchester in 2008 . Drymonakos was banned for two years and the Austrian swimmer Dinko Jukić , who was fourth in Manchester , was subsequently awarded the bronze medal at the World Championships. Later, Jukić received the bronze medal there as well, finishing fourth at the European Championships in Eindhoven. The French swimmer Christophe Lebon also inherited an EM bronze medal after being disqualified.
