The 29th European Swimming Championships took place from March 13th to 24th, 2008 in Eindhoven . The European Swimming Federation (LEN) awarded the event to the Dutch city on December 10, 2005 on the fringes of the European Short Course Championships in Trieste . The only competitor was initially Turin . The Italian swimming federation withdrew the candidacy shortly before the decision in order to give the application of Rome for the swimming world championships 2009 more chances. This is the second time since 1966 that the Netherlands has hosted the European Swimming Championships.

The venue for the competitions was the national swimming center of the Netherlands De Tongelreep .

On February 8, 2007, the title fights were brought forward from the original date (March 26 to April 6) in order to ensure a longer period of time to the 2008 Short Course World Championships in Manchester . The 2008 European Open Water Championships took place separately in Dubrovnik .
