Joanne Amy "Jo" Jackson (born September 12, 1986 in Northallerton , North Yorkshire ) is a former British swimmer and former world record holder in the 400 m freestyle .

Career

Joanne Jackson competed in international junior competitions from 2001. In 2003 she swam her first senior races and immediately won gold in the 200 m freestyle at the European Short Course Championships in Dublin .

In 2004, at the age of 17, she took part in the Olympic Games in Athens , but did not get past the prelim in her only individual start over 400 m. She was also used in the run-up to the British 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.

In 2006, she won silver at both the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships on her parade course 400 m freestyle.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Jackson won the bronze medal in the 400m freestyle behind Rebecca Adlington and Katie Hoff .

In March 2009, Joanne Jackson set a new world record over 400 m freestyle at the British Championships in 4: 00.66, which was broken a few months later by Federica Pellegrini . At the World Championships in Rome in July 2009 Jackson improved her personal best to 4: 00.60 and won the silver medal behind Pellegrini, who again undercut her own world record. In the 4 × 200 m freestyle season, she won the bronze medal with Jazmin Carlin , Caitlin McClatchey and Rebecca Adlington in record time in Europe . In addition, she won silver in the 800 m freestyle behind Lotte Friis .

In 2010 she was able to win medals at the European Championships in Budapest with both freestyle relays: silver over 4 × 100 m and bronze over 4 × 200 m. In 2010 and 2011, however, her athletic progress was hampered by an asthma disease .

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , she took part in Olympic competitions for the third and last time and finished fifth with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.

At British Championships Jackson won five gold, three silver and four bronze medals between 2003 and 2012.

After the London Games, Joanne Jackson ended her career and now runs a swimming school (Joanne Jackson Swim Academy) together with her partner Grant Turner , who is also a former swimmer. Her sister Nicola Jackson is also a former competitive swimmer.

In 2009 Joanne Jackson held the world record over 400 m on the long track for a few months in 4: 00.66. In addition, together with Jazmin Carlin, Caitlin McClatchey and Rebecca Adlington, she holds the European record in the 4 × 200 m freestyle on the long track in 7: 45.51 and the British record together with Melanie Marshall , Caitlin McClatchey and Rebecca Adlington in 7: 38.96 over 4 × 200 m freestyle on the short course.
