Lotte Friis (born February 9, 1988 in Hørsholm ) is a former Danish swimmer on the long freestyle courses.

Friis won her first international medal by winning the 800 meter freestyle title at the 2007 European Short Course Championships in Debrecen . A year later she won the bronze medal in the 1500 meters freestyle at the European Championships in Eindhoven . At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , she won bronze in the 800 meter freestyle. In 2009 in Rome she became world champion in the 800 meters freestyle and took silver in the 1500 meters.

At the European Short Course Championships in 2009 in Istanbul , Friis became European freestyle champion over 800 meters and European runner-up over 400 meters. Then she won the election for Denmark's Sportswoman of the Year 2009 against the European table tennis champion Michael Maze and the tennis player and US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki . She won the same medals at the European Championships on the short course in 2011 and 2012.

Lotte Friis had her most successful championships in 2010 at the European championships in Budapest , when she became European champion in the 800 and 1500 meters freestyle and also won the bronze medal in the 400 meters. At the Olympic Games in 2012 she won no medal, in the 400 and 800 meters freestyle she was fourth and fifth respectively. In 2013, she won the silver medal at the World Championships in Barcelona on the 800 and 1500 meters. She set a new European record over 1500 meters behind the world record swimming Katie Ledecky in 15: 38.88 minutes.

Lotte Friis ended her active swimming career in April 2017 at the age of 29.

Honors

Lotte Friis was voted Denmark's Sportsman of the Year in 2009 and has been the 34th member of the Danish Sports Hall of Fame since 2019 .
