Erika Villaécija García (born June 2, 1984 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish swimmer .

Career

Villaécija's favorite disciplines are the long freestyle distances, namely 400 meters, 800 meters and 1500 meters. In the 400 meter freestyle, she performed for the first time at the 2002 European Swimming Championships in Berlin when she reached eighth place. Just one year later, at the 2003 European Short Course in Dublin , she won her first international title with the gold medal in the 800 meter freestyle. At the 2004 European Cross Country Championships in Madrid , she was also able to swim a European championship with the gold medal in the 800 meter freestyle. She also won a second title together with the Spanish 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay. In the same year she also took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , where she finished in the 800 meter freestyle final and placed fifth there. With the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay, she was sixth overall. Only over the 400 meter freestyle course could she not reach the final with 18th place. The 2008 European Aquatics Championships in Eindhoven could Villaécija successfully end up with two European vice-champion titles in the 800 meters and 1500 meters freestyle. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , she came both over 400 meters freestyle with a 23rd place and over 800 meters freestyle with a 16th place not beyond the heats. Also at the swimming world championships in Rome in 2009 she could not win a medal with a sixth place over 800 meters freestyle and a fifth place over 1500 meters freestyle. It was not until the European Short Course Championships in Istanbul in 2009 that she won the silver medal in the 800 meter freestyle. At the short course world championships in 2012 at the same place, she finished eighth in the final over 400 m (4: 05.78), her compatriot Melanie Costa won .
