Manchester Evening News Arena

The Short Course World Championships 2008 in swimming were from 9 to 13 April 2008. Manchester held and were from the International Swimming Federation FINA organized. They were played right in the city center in the Manchester Evening News Arena , which is usually a concert venue. For the world championships, two temporary 25-meter swimming pools (one for the competitions and one for warming up) were set up on the floor of the hall and filled with two million liters of water. 636 athletes from 117 nations took part in the world championships.

The 29th Summer Olympics in Beijing taking place from August 8th to 24th were the reason that many top athletes from some nations did not make the trip to Manchester, because they wanted to prepare themselves ideally for Beijing. Alain Bernard ( FRA ), Arkadi Wjattschanin ( RUS ), László Cseh ( HUN ), Eamon Sullivan , Grant Hackett (both AUS ), Michael Phelps , Aaron Peirsol , Brendan Hansen , Ian Crocker (all USA ) were missing from the men and Laure Manaudou ( FRA ), Federica Pellegrini ( ITA ), Jana Klotschkowa ( UKR ), Anastassija Sujewa ( RUS ), Flavia Rigamonti ( SUI ), Lisbeth Trickett , Stephanie Rice , Sophie Edington , Emily Seebohm , Jessicah Schipper , Leisel Jones (all AUS ), Kate Ziegler , or Natalie Coughlin (both USA ) for women. The Chinese team also went to Manchester poorly in view of the Olympic Games in their own country.

Furthermore, almost all top German swimming athletes stayed away from these short course world championships, as they were preparing for the 120th German swimming championships from April 18th to 23rd. The time swum at the German Championships also decided on the Olympic qualification .

Despite all this, no fewer than 17 world , 20 European and 9 other world championship records fell at these world championships .

The main reason for this record flood is the new, first in February 2008 presented, swimsuit LZR Racer of the Australian swimming gear manufacturer Speedo . From the introduction of the swimsuit on February 13, 2008 to April 1, 2008, the new LZR Racer was used in the 28 of the 29 new world records set. The FINA also confirmed the admissibility of the new suit during these competitions and thus rejected the protesting, other swimwear manufacturers.

The big stars at these world championships were Ryan Lochte ( USA ), with 4 gold and 2 silver medals in the men and Kirsty Coventry ( ZIM ) with 4 gold and one bronze medal in the women. She single- handedly led Zimbabwe to 4th place in the medal table. United StatesUnited States ZimbabweZimbabwe

In addition, the 38-year-old British swimming star Mark Foster , who had actually already announced his resignation after the European Short Course Championships in Helsinki in 2006 , received special attention. He won the silver medal in the 50m freestyle .

In addition, it was decided during these world championships that the 2010 World Short Course Championships should take place in Dubai and the 2012 World Short Course Championships in Istanbul .
