The 15th Swimming World Championships (officially: 15th FINA World Championship ) took place from July 19 to August 4, 2013 in the Spanish city of Barcelona .

The 21-member Bureau of the World Swimming Federation (FINA) awarded the event to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates on July 18, 2009, the evening before the World Swimming Championships in Rome . The application prevailed in the decisive vote against the candidacies from Hamburg (Germany) and Moscow (Russia). In advance, Belgrade (Serbia), Budapest / Balatonfüred (Hungary), Hong Kong (China) and Madrid (Spain) also expressed their interest in the event.

In May 2010 the Organizing Committee of the United Arab Emirates announced that it would not hold the event. At the meeting of the FINA Executive Committee on September 28, 2010 in Punta del Este , it was agreed that Barcelona would be the venue for the 2013 competitions. Hamburg had previously withdrawn its renewed application. Barcelona is hosting this event for the second time since 2003 .

Venues

The venues were the same four buildings in which the 2003 World Swimming Championships were held.

The lane and synchronized swimming competitions took place in Palau Sant Jordi, while open water swimming and the newly introduced cliff jumping discipline took place in Port Vell, a port area of Barcelona. The water divers held their competitions in the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc, the water polo teams fought for medals in the Piscines Bernat Picornell.

Attendees

2310 athletes from 180 nations took part in the World Championships in Barcelona. Of these 2310 athletes, 309 fell on synchronized swimming, 245 on diving competitions, 190 on open water swimmers, 416 on water polo players (32 teams with 13 players each) and 1150 on pool swimming competitions.

Schedule and sports

A total of 68 competitions were held, two more than at the 2011 World Championships . New to the program was the cliff jumping discipline , in which athletes in the port area of Barcelona had to show their skills in jumping from platforms with heights of 20 meters (women) and 27 meters (men).
