Christian David Sprenger (born December 19, 1985 in Brisbane , Queensland ) is a former Australian swimmer .
Career
Christian Sprenger already belonged to the Australian team at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and swam in the run-up to the tier relay, which won gold in the final. Two years later he qualified for the 100 m and 200 m chest for the Olympic Games in Beijing , but did not get beyond the heats there. However, he won the silver medal with the 4 × 100 m individual medley relay after he was used in the preliminary run. At the swimming world championships in Rome in 2009 he set a new world record over 200 m chest in the semifinals in 02: 07.31 min , but had to admit defeat to Dániel Gyurta and Eric Shanteau in the final run. Nevertheless, he won his first international individual medal with bronze.
In 2010 he won silver over the 100 m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and swam again in the run-up to the Australian medley relay, which then won gold. At the short course world championships in Dubai at the end of the year he achieved the best result in 16th place over 100 m breaststroke. At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai , Sprenger took part in the 100 m breaststroke and came in tenth. He was also used in the run-up to the Australian layer relay, which took silver in the final.
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Sprenger won the silver medal behind Cameron van der Burgh in the 100m chest . He was also part of Australia's medley relay, which won bronze behind the USA and Japan. The following year he achieved the greatest success of his career with gold over 100 m breaststroke at the 2013 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona . He also won silver there over 50 m breaststroke and with the Australian individual relay relay.
In 2014 Christian Sprenger won bronze over 50 m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow behind Cameron van der Burgh and Adam Peaty as well as silver in the relay over 4 × 100 m individual medley. At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan , he failed in both of his 50 and 100 m breaststroke starts in the heats. At the beginning of 2016, he announced his resignation due to the consequences of a shoulder injury sustained in 2014.
Personal
Sprenger is of German descent and grew up in Brisbane. The Australian freestyle swimmer Nicholas Sprenger is his cousin.
Personal bests
Sprenger set two world records in his career , but they were broken again: From July 30, 2009, in 02: 07.31 minutes, he held the world record over 200 m chest on the long track , which was undercut by Dániel Gyurta on July 1, 2012 . On August 10, 2009, he swam a new world record over 200 m chest on the short course in 02: 01.98 minutes , which was also broken by Gyurta on December 13, 2009.
