His big breakthrough came a year later, when he won the silver medal over 100 meters and the bronze medal over the 50-meter chest distance at the 2008 World Short Course Championships in Manchester .

At the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing in 2008 Van der Burgh did not make it past the semifinals because he could not come close to his pre-run South African record in 00: 59.96 minutes. In view of the very strong competition, he finished tenth.

The almost seven-year-old record of the American Ed Moses over 100 meters chest improved Van der Burgh by 59 hundredths to 0: 56.88 minutes. Van der Burgh has already improved the world record over 50 meters chest twice. For the first, he set the almost two-year-old best time of the resigned Ukrainian Oleh Lissohor at the World Cup in Moscow by nine hundredths to 0: 26.08 minutes and for the second, just three days later, at the World Cup in Stockholm , he was the first person to stay on the Short track under 26 seconds and set the world record to 0: 25.94 minutes.

At the swimming world championships in Rome in 2009 he first won bronze over 100 meters breast. A day later he set a new world record in the 50 meter chest in the semi-finals . In the final, he achieved his greatest success to date with winning the title in the 50 meter chest and setting another world record. In 2010 he won the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi over 100 m breaststroke, in addition there was a silver medal with the 4 × 100 m individual relay.

He won the 50 meters and 100 meters chest at the Pan-African Games in 2011 .

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , he achieved a new world record of 58.46 seconds and won the gold medal at the same time.

At the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow van der Burgh won the 50 m chest in 26.76 seconds, setting a new Commonwealth Games record. He also won the silver medal in the 100 m breaststroke and a bronze medal with the 4 × 100 m individual relay. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest , van der Burgh had to admit defeat to Adam Peaty and won silver and bronze respectively. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast , he beat Peaty in the 50m chest and won gold. There were also bronze medals for the 100 m chest and the 4 × 100 m medley.
